House ‘almost a total loss’

Leavenworth Times – February 22, 2016

A rural Leavenworth County home is “probably almost a total loss” following a Monday morning fire, a fire department official said.

The fire was reported around 6:45 a.m. at 28161 183rd St.

Lt. Dave Asmus of Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1 said no people were injured in the fire but a pet rabbit was killed. Firefighters were able to rescue another rabbit from the home.

Firefighters also were told there had been pet lizards in the single-story house, but Asmus is not sure what happened to the creatures.

“We never did find them,” he said.

Firefighters believe the fire started in the area of a chimney, but the exact cause has not been determined.
