Between the two, the John and Mike Hartman have spent almost 90 years working for the Shawnee Fire Department.

It started with John Hartman many years ago. He became a volunteer firefighter in the city and found a career in it that would last his professional lifetime. He was a firefighter for 57 years.

In that time, he had a son named Mike Hartman. Mike grew up around the fire station, and John says he always wanted to become a firefighter.

“There was no doubt,” John Hartman said.

Mike Hartman said he was always trying to go to the station early in the morning with his father.

“That’s really the only reason I’m here: my dad,” Mike Hartman said.

Mike Hartman followed in his father’s footsteps and last week was honored for working 30 years with the Shawnee Fire Department. He is currently a fire captain in the department.

John Hartman looked on and took pictures as Mayor Michelle Distler and City Manager Carol Gonzales honored and thanked his son, among many other city employees who were honored for their years of service to the city.

Mike Hartman was just as happy to have his father at the event as his father was to be there. Also in attendance was Mike Hartman’s son Paul and daughter Grace. Mike Hartman said the line of firefighters in his family may end with him as his children wish to pursue other dreams, which he is fine with.

Shawnee is the one department he has ever worked for. Shawnee is also the only town he has called home.

“This is my home,” Mike Hartman said. “It’s going to be hard to leave this position eventually.”

Hartman was one of two people honored for 30 years of service to the city of Shawnee at the city employee recognition event. Volunteer Jerry Meyer was also honored for his 30 years, or as he said, “time for two World Series,” on the civil service commission.

Other employees honored included Robert Myers, master firefighter with the Shawnee Fire Department who has dedicated 25 years to the city.

Employees who were also honored but were unable to attend were (from the Shawnee Fire Department), Ethan Foster, Josh Chaney, Daniel Hammontree, Jeff Weltmer, Timothy Wigginton, David Wolff and Larry Beets were thanked for their years of service ranging from 10 to 20 years.
