Darrell D. Cordill

Darrell Dwain Cordill, 72, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Darrell was born January 3, 1943, to Norman and Esther (Grasch) Cordill in Salina, KS. He graduated from Salina High School in 1961. On February 11, 1962, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Kuster, and they had two children. Darrell was a long time resident of Overland Park, KS.
He retired from the Overland Park Fire Department at the rank of Captain with 32 years of service. While serving the community as a firefighter, he also helped found the Explorer Post for junior firefighters. Darrell’s influence on young firefighters and officers carried over multiple generations. The citizens of Overland Park will be protected for years to come by those trained and mentored by Captain Cordill. Darrell was a teacher in every sense of the word. Whether teaching young children fire safety in schools, young firefighters how to safely extinguish fires or mechanics how to keep fire trucks operating safely, Darrell’s combined passion for fire safety and learning showed in everything he did. Darrell served in a volunteer capacity in Jefferson County and Ozawkie, KS as both fire chief and training chief. In a continuation of his public service, the family business, Apparatus Services, LLC, will continue to operate in full capacity servicing regional departments.
In addition to being a fireman and trainer, there wasn’t much Darrell couldn’t fix. He was a mechanic, finish carpenter, and machinist. If he couldn’t fix it, it probably wasn’t broke! Darrell loved to work in his woodshop creating many projects for friends and family.
He loved taking the family camping and canoeing for vacations with the Independent Order of Foresters Camping Club. In addition, he gave his son, Jeff, and daughter, Shelly, the knowledge and love of auto mechanics and woodworking. Up to the day of his passing, he was still sharing his abundant knowledge to his family and friends.
Darrell was a dedicated husband, father and man of many trades. His knowledge and passions will forever be treasured and passed on for many generations throughout the community. He will be missed by many.
He is survived by his wife of the home; son, Jeffery Cordill (Michelle) of Paola, KS; daughter, Shelly Cordill of Oskaloosa, KS; granddaughter, CJ Cordill (fiancé Logan Macklin) of Paola, KS and two “adopted” grandchildren of Onaga, KS; brother, Dean Cordill (Sandy) of Topeka, KS; sister, Judy Hallisay of Jamesburg, NJ; many nieces, nephews, neighbors, friends and many generations of the Overland Park Fire Department family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Vince Hallisay.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 31 at McGilley & Hoge Chapel.
Funeral services will be at 11am Monday, June 1 at Atonement Lutheran Church, 9948 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Inurnment will be in Antioch Pioneer Cemetery at a future date.
