A two-vehicle accident eight miles west of Pratt claimed the life of a Garden City woman just after noon on Saturday.

The accident occurred when Velma Base, 87 of Garden City, was westbound on U.S. 54/400 approximately eight miles west of Pratt in a 2003 Pontiac Vibe.

She crossed the centerline just east of Cullison. An eastbound 2012 Honda Accord driven by 53-year-old Que Thi Nguyen, also from Garden City, struck the Pontiac broadside on the passenger side according to witnesses, said Pratt County Sheriff Vernon Chinn.

The Honda came to a stop on the south shoulder and east bound lane facing east while the Pontiac spun off the road and ended up in the south ditch facing north. Eyewitnesses said there was heavy rain at the time of the accident, Chinn said.

Base was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was ejected from the vehicle. The Pratt County Coroner pronounced her dead at the scene.

Pratt County Emergency Services transported Nguyen and her 52-year-old male passenger, Sang Ngoc To, also from Garden City, to Pratt Regional Medical Center for treatment. Both Nguyen and To were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Pratt County EMS, Pratt County Rescue, Kansas Department of Transportation and Cullison Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Pratt County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident. The accident was reported at 12:10 p.m. and was just past the east side of Cullison.
