Ellsworth attorney John Sherman was named the Ellsworth VFW Post 6485 Citizen of the Year during a ceremony Saturday afternoon at the VFW building in Ellsworth.

Ellsworth VFW Commander Michael Johnson said each year local VFW members select a community member who has given of their time and/or resources to assist the veteran’s organization.

“As you may know, we’re here today because we lost our building a couple of years ago to fire,” Johnson said. “Due to that fire, unfortunately, we had several legal problems that had to be taken care of.”

Johnson said he sought Sherman’s legal assistance, and every time he asked Sherman to send him a bill, the attorney would just smile.

Also honored were four local firefighters. Kelly Pflughoeft was named the Ellsworth Firefighter of the Year, Susan Thornton was named the Lorraine Firefighter of the Year and Jeremy Hlad was named the Wilson Firefighter of the Year.

To close the ceremony, the Ellsworth VFW also recognized its seven living charter members–William J. Gwinner, Richard Urban, Jack W. Sanders, James H. Guilfoyle, Jack Rathbun, D.W. Ranker, and James J. Bezemek.

Johnson said there were 59 members of the Ellsworth VFW Post when it was chartered in 1966.

“We owe these guys everything,” said Doug Stefek, Post 6485 adjutant.
