Smoke alarms alerted an Overland Park woman who got to safety before fire claimed her home Monday morning.

Firefighters from Overland Park, Lenexa and Shawnee responded to the fire just after 11:30 a.m. in the 8600 block of Melrose Street.

Crews reported heavy smoke visible while en route.

Firefighters met neighbors in front of the house and were told that everyone was out safely. They then went to work attacking a fire on the back side of the home, but it quickly became apparent the fire was in the attic of the single-story home.

Due to significant weakening of the structure, crews exited and fought the fire from the outside.

Once the bulk of the flames were knocked down, crews were able to safely make interior access and attack the the fire.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters had the fire under control in about 50 minutes.

The older woman who made it to safety was home alone at the time of the fire, but two adults and a child live in the home as well.

The home is likely a loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
