At 1:10 p.m. on April 1, St. Francis Volunteer Fire Department was called out to Wheeler to a large fire where two barns caught fire. Along with the Fire Department, the Bird City Fire Department brought a tanker full of water and two farmers also assisted by bringing additional water tankers.

The Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the scene in Wheeler, as well as the Emergency Medical Technicians. No injuries were reported.

Owners of the property, Tiffany Plute and Linda and Dennis Whitmore, reported that two barns and nine vehicles were lost in the fire. However, they were very thankful for all of the help they have received, and wanted to e sure to thank the emergency responders and everyone that has offered help for their time and effort.

St. Francis Fire Chief Dan Blair said that he was told when they responded to the scene that a neighbor nearby was burning trash, and it had gotten away from him. He asks that residents please call dispatch before they burn any trash to make sure it is okay to burn.

The St. Francis Fire Department and emergency responders left the residence at 3:55 p.m.

The Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the cause of the fire that took place at the Whitmore residence on April 1.
