A prairie fire erupted on a farm about 10 miles west of Oberlin on Saturday.

Oberlin Fire Chief Bill Cathcart said the blaze began around 2:30 p.m. when sparks from a cutting torch ignited grass in a field.

“They were repairing a windmill,” Cathcart said.

The land, owned by Betty May, suffered limited damage due to the quick response of the Oberlin Fire Department. Chief Cathcart said it took volunteers three hours to suppress the fire, but they were able to contain it to only 15 acres.

The continuation of drought-like conditions make fire a real threat in the prairie lands, the chief said.
