The call went out on the emergency services radio at 10:21 a.m. Monday.

The voice across the radio said, “Final page. Attention all units and listening stations, this is the final page for retired Fire Chief Willis Swart. Chief Swart provided over 30 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Wichita, Sedgwick County and Riley County. We thank you Chief Swart for many years of service.”

Chief Willis “David” Swart, Bentley, lost his eight-month battle with cancer last Wednesday, April 2. Swart and his wife, Nancy, moved to the Bentley area after his retirement from the Fort Riley Fire Department.

He touched many lives, including the staff at Halstead Health and Rehabilitation. Swart was a patient there for about four weeks. The Swarts returned home for hospice care March 20. He passed away on April 2.

The local fire and EMS departments honored Chief Swart’s service. His funeral procession from Halstead to Bentley was led by Halstead’s fire engine 23, and three other EMS and Fire department vehicles. With their lights flashing, these vehicles led Chief Swart to his final resting place.
