Police are investigating a house fire and a shooting at the same northeast Wichita residence.
Officers were originally called around 4:15 Saturday morning to a shooting in the 1300 block of North Pershing, near 13th and Oliver. As they were heading the the scene, calls came in about a house fire at the same residence.
Sgt. Kevin Kochenderfer said that when officers arrived, they found one man who had been shot as well as the front of the home engulfed in flames. There were about 10 people inside.
“There were numerous people that the officers had to help…to get out of the basement,” Kochenderfer said.
The shooting victim was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. He was coherent and able to speak with police and EMS. Several others were treated for smoke inhalation. No names have been released.
Investigators are still trying to determine if the fire and shooting are connected.
“That’s what we’re trying to figure out right now,” Kochenderfer said. “If one had anything to do with the other, or after the shooting happened, if–sheer panic–someone dropped a cigarette. We don’t know.”
He did not say whether any arrests had been made.
