One person was hospitalized Thursday morning after a two-vehicle accident that resulted after officials said a large truck attempted a U-turn on the Oakland Expressway just east of Topeka.

The crash was reported at 8:15 a.m. in the northbound lane of the expressway, just north of the S.E. 6th Street on-ramp.

Sheriff’s officials at the scene said a black Hyundai Santa Fe sport utility vehicle was northbound on the expressway when it collided with a large white box truck that had been northbound on the expressway but was attempting to make a U-turn.

The Hyundai’s front end, up to its windshield, was wedged under the driver’s side midsection of the truck, which came to rest facing west spanning both north- and southbound lanes of the expressway.

The Hyundai’s hood was crumpled, its windshield was shattered and its left front tire was flattened. Its driver’s side airbag also deployed.

The driver of the Hyundai, a woman, was reported to be alert and talking as she was being treated at the scene by American Medical Response ambulance crews. The woman was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with injuries that weren’t believed to be life-threatening.

A small, yellow sign on the rear windshield of the Hyundai said “Baby on Board,” and officers were seen removing a child safety seat from the rear of the vehicle. However, the woman was reported to have been alone in her SUV.

Lettering on the driver’s door of the white box truck indicated it belonged to Cross-Midwest Tire Co.

No one inside the truck was reported to have been injured.

The accident was being investigated by the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Topeka Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Department of Transportation, the Topeka Fire Department and the Shawnee Heights Fire District.
