It’s that time of year when kids can go to the park and play. parks and their playground equipment are popular items for kids but in Burrton kids will not be playing on the equipment for awhile as a couple of juveniles destroyed the city’s playground with fire, leaving behind from $10,000 to $20,000 in damages.

Orange snow fencing and caution tape now block off the burned area of the structure due to safety concerns and damage.

Sheriff T. Walton said a number of witnesses saw kids playing at the Park located at 403 E. Adams on Sunday, March 2. Next thing witnesses saw was the playground equipment up in flames. Walton said a coat or jacket had been set on fire and it caught the equipment on fire, doing thousands of dollars of damage. Walton said an accelerant was not used in the fire but that the wood chips under the equipment may have contributed to the fire damage.

Walton said they questioned the juvenile suspects in the case and got a confession on Thursday.

Charges are pending on the case. He said the juveniles involved were local.
