After a tornado struck the community of Baxter Springs Sunday evening, Governor Sam Brownback gave approval for a State of Disaster Emergency proclamation.

The Kansas Adjutant General said in a press release that 60-70 homes and 20-25 businesses are reported destroyed.

Search and rescue efforts are currently underway as of 9:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management and the Cherokee County emergency management officials are responding to requests for assistance as well as the Northeast and Southeast Region Incident Management Teams.

These groups will travel to Baxter Springs to assist local authorities with disaster management.
