The Herington Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 523 N. C Street on April 10, 2014 at about 8:16 p.m. Fire Chief Ken Staatz arrived on the scene of a working garage fire with flames visible on the east side of the structure at 8:21 p.m. The garage was located at the back of the lot approximately 40 feet from the residence. Initial flames on the outside of the garage were suppressed, but the fire had burned through the structure and spread. Fire crews had to make forcible entry into the structure through the north side of the garage through an overhead door to extinguish the fire. Fire crews removed siding and the metal roofing to suppress the flames and remove chances of rekindling. Fire crews quickly doused the fire that had started by a gas grill that had reportedly been utilized too close to the structure. The HFD department remained on scene for about two hours ensuring the fire was completely extinguished. There were 14 firefighters that responded to the call with three pumpers and a heavy rescue. Herington Police Department also responded to the scene and provided traffic control.
