Grass fire burns north of Salina

Salina Journal – April 23, 2014

Firefighters from five departments spent most of Wednesday afternoon battling a pasture fire in northern Saline and southern Ottawa counties.
“We’ve got a big fire,” said Hannah Stambaugh, director of Saline County Emergency Management. She was talking on a cellphone from Ohio Street and Ottawa County Road.
Dispatchers in Salina sent firefighters to an area about 5 1/2 miles north of Salina. The first alert came just after 2 p.m.
Three Saline County fire districts, as well as fire departments from Minneapolis and Bennington, were in the fight.
The fire started in the vicinity of Thacher and Ohio streets and was moving north, Stambaugh said. It was burning mostly pastures, but it also attacked hedgerows, she said at about 4 p.m.
She had no idea what started the fire.
“It’s too early to tell,” Stambaugh said. “We’re still out here fighting.”
