SW Wichita garage fire ruled arson

KAKE – April 18, 2014

Investigators have ruled a fire that burned a garage earlier this week was arson.

The fire broke out early Tuesday morning at a home in the 4500 block of South Osage in southwest Wichita. Fire crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from the attached garage, but quickly extinguished it before it spread to the rest of the home.

There were no injuries at the scene but soon after, officers responded to a car accident near I-235 and West Street.

Inside the car was a 17-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy suffering from minor injuries. There were also burn holes in the older boy’s clothing.

According to police, the 17-year-old said, “God would decide who was evil and who was going to die,” before crashing into the utility pole.

Both boys were treated at an area hospital, and the 17-year-old was arrested for battery and child endangerment. Officers also found meth in the car.

Investigators are still trying to determine if that incident is connected to the garage fire.

The fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damage to the garage, which is considered a total loss.
