Arkansas City firefighters inspect the smoking engine compartment of a 1988 Chevrolet bus Wednesday night at Hillcrest Bible Baptist Church.

The Ark City Fire-EMS Department was dispatched at 8:44 p.m. for a report that the bus’ front end was fully involved.

The 45-passenger bus was nearly full when the fire broke out, according to ACFD Lt. Paul Hunter, but an assistant pastor and the bus driver were able to get everyone off the bus safely.

Although firefighters put out the fire, which apparently was caused by a mechanical engine malfunction, after just a few minutes, the blaze inflicted significant smoke and heat damage on the bus, which was completely totaled, Hunter said. Luckily, there were no injuries.

The fire began as the bus was idling and the driver was preparing to leave the parking lot.

The church used the bus to transport children home after Wednesday night services have ended.
