Parents as Teachers (PAT) organized a “Community Helper Day” for area children on Saturday, April 5.

The event was held at the La Cygne Fire Station and included a video on fire safety, tour of a fire truck and facilities, demonstration of a firefighter in full gear and car seat safety checks by the Linn County Sheriff’s Department.

Fire Captain Jerome Mitzner pointed out to parents how important it was for all ages of children to see a firefighter in full gear prior to an emergency. Mitzner noted, “The sights, sounds and feeling of firefighter’s gear can be very scary and by having them watch a firefighter put on their gear they can see he is still just a man.”

PAT is an organization that provides free information, support and encouragement to parents who will help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life, from conception to kindergarten.
