A Saturday afternoon fire damaged a Parsons home, and the homeowner suffered minor injuries.

Parsons firefighters were called at 2225 Clark at 4:02 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from the east side of the home and used pre-connected lines to bring the fire under control, Fire Chief Larry Steeby said.

“The fire damage to the structure was quite extensive. The fire cause is believed to be a cooking fire in the kitchen area of the residence,” Steeby said.

Firefighters believe there were three people in the home at the time of the fire. Everyone escaped and refused medical treatment on scene. The owner of the residence did eventually seek medical attention at Labette Health for minor injuries.

Lavanda Duncan is the home owner and occupant. The home was not insured, Steeby said. He estimated damage to the home at $15,000 and $6,500 to the contents.

“The Parson Police Department did an outstanding job of trying to get people away from the fire scene and control all the traffic that came into the area to see what was going on,” Steeby said in a prepared statement.
