Area grass fires keep crews hopping

The rash of grass fires has been keeping area fire departments hopping lately.

Over the past eight plus days, officials report that there have been 35 fire calls made to grass fires in Anderson County, as well as mutual aids to Linn County.

They add that roughly 1,000 acres have burned in the fires.

“We are starting to write tickets for burning without a burn permit,” JD Mersman said Tuesday afternoon.

He added that there is a current burn ban on, and that when they relaxed it a bit last Saturday, they “got crushed”.

Mersman said the burn ban will stay in place until the wind dies down and some moisture appears.
