Shawnee Heights crews battle outbreak of brush fires

Topeka Capital Journal – April 11, 2014

Shawnee Heights fire crews had their hands full at midday Friday as they battled grass fires in at least three different locations in the southeast part of Shawnee County.

On a day when weather conditions once again elevated the threat of grass fires, crews responded just after 11 a.m. to a field fire in the 7200 block of S.E. 29th, where a residence reportedly was threatened.

Then shortly after noon, two calls were received within minutes of each other. Shawnee Heights units were called to brush fires near S.E. 37th and Stanley, and to another near S.E. 93rd and California. The California site reportedly involved a 40-acre field.

Both calls were received around 12:07 p.m. Crews reported having both fires under control about 30 minutes later.

Shawnee Heights units were then called at 12:17 to a grass fire near a residence in the 5500 block of S.E. Radner.

All fires were reported out before 12:45 p.m.

There was no immediate indication that any homes were damaged.
