A grass fire at Wheat Road and K-360, southeast of Winfield, burned 15 acres late Monday, but caused no building losses.

Winfield Fire Marshal Dennis Darby said the fire was a controlled burn that went out of control.

The heat source for the grass fire was flying sparks or embers from the controlled burn.

The fire burned a mix of brush and grass.

The Winfield Fire Department sent two grass fire trucks and a tanker to the scene.

Firefighters arrived at 11:36 p.m. and remained at the scene until 12:57 a.m. Tuesday, Darby said.

Winfield police officers also responded to the fire.

Deputies from the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control, according to the sheriff’s office activity report Tuesday.
