Seventeen firefighters from Ness City, Ransom, Great Bend, Lane County Rural Fire and McCracken Fire Departments took part in the interior firefighting trailer exercise on March 22. Firefighters put their skills learned in the Firefighter 1 class into action by extinguishing three different types of fires, a stove fire, bedroom fire and a basement fire. The course is designed to prepare students to operate as members of interior fire attack teams by advancing charged hose lines into the room of origin and putting out the fire using proper techniques. It gave the students a good opportunity to actually go into a fire and experience with low visibility and high heat conditions, all in a safe and controlled environment. The training was provided by the University of Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute free of charge. Photos courtesy of Sean Sehl.
