A fresh round of grass fires have occurred outside of Hays.

According to Dick Klaus,  Ellis County Rural Fire Director, crews  were called to four grass fires Wednesday evening and, at just before 9 p.m., were on the scene “cleaning up” a grass fire at the 400th block of Wiles Road.

Klaus called the fire at Wiles Road “the big one” of the four and said about 60 acres were burned.

Klaus said the other three fires occurred at Yocemento and River View, the 2400 block of Yocemento , and 170th and Riverview.

Companies 4, 5, 6 and 8 were called to the fires.

No other details were released. Hays Post will have updates as they become available.

Wednesday morning, Ellis County Sheriff Ed Harbin said his department and the Kansas State Fire Marshal are actively investigating 20 suspicious fires that occurred beginning in early March.
