A 23-year-old man from Wichita was arrested after he led Butler County deputies on a high speed chase in and around Augusta.

The driver, Christopher Wayne Pool, was driving over the speed limit on Highway 54 west of Augusta around 8:10 p.m. A deputy attempted to pull him over, but instead he sped away.

The 1994 Ford Thunderbird drove through Augusta and turned on Haverhill Rd. Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet said speeds exceeded 100 mph at times. Another deputy was able to deploy tire deflating spike strips near SW 210 which caught all four of the tires.

Pool continued to drive on the rims of the tires until he lost control of the vehicle near SW 230th and Haverhill Rd.

Three people were inside, including a 29-year-old who was 5-months pregnant. She complained of stomach pains and was taken to Wesley Medical Center. The other passenger was a 22-year-old female who was released.

When all three were out of the car, it started on fire. Deputies were able to put the fire out with fire extinguishers but called the Douglass Fire Department to monitor the situation because of high winds and dry grass nearby.

Pool was taken into custody on several traffic violations, including fleeing and eluding law enforcement.
