harper fire 3262014

Debra Klick of Attica had been to Harper to buy groceries and was enroute home in blowing snow that cut visibility down to a few yards when she and her passenger, daughter Jessica Beal, smelled smoke.

The smoke smell got stronger after they turned off of K2 to go west on 160 highway. About two miles west they decided the vehicle was on fire and the two ladies along with a dog abandoned the vehicle in a blizzard.

The only lucky part of the evening (about 7:28 p.m.) was that a car stopped and they got into the warmth of the passing vehicle as the wind chill outside at the time was a minus 15 degrees with heavy snow.

Harper fire units were slowed to about a 35 mile per hour response due to visibility and the roads had not been plowed at the time. The 1990 Plymouth Voyager van was a total loss as was the groceries in the back of the van.
