Five fires that popped up overnight in Butler County are being investigated as “suspicious”.

The fires started all about the same time SE of Augusta around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning. Major Ray Marbut, Augusta Department of Public Safety, said the fires are being investigated because they started all about the same time, in the same area and at an odd time of night.

“We take this very very seriously, because it’s putting citizens in danger, citizens property in danger, firefighters lives  in danger and it’s a drain on resources, a lot of tax dollars are going into this,” said Major Marbut.

The fires Wednesday morning caused damage to a barn on SW Hopkins Switch and a home west of 180th and SW Hopkins Switch.

This adds onto three other situations on March 19th and 20th where several fires happened at similar locations. Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet estimates around 14 separate fires are being investigated as “suspicious” at this time.

Fire investigators said neighbors need to keep an eye out for suspicious vehicle and people, and call the sheriff’s department immediately.
