Leavenworth firefighters are responding to a brush fire near 187th Street and High Prairie Road.

A photo from a KMBC 9 viewer in the area showed flames and thick black smoke coming from the scene.

Leavenworth Fire Chief Rick Huhn said about 150 acres burned since the call came in just before 3 p.m.

He said it started because a man was illegally burning off his pasture. He said it’s too early to know whether the man will be charged.

Firefighters said the perimeter of the fire is out, but crews will stay at the scene to douse and monitor brush piles. No injuries or damage to buildings have been reported.

Dry, windy conditions increased the fire danger Thursday. People were advised to avoid open burning and to take care when discarding smoking materials.
